What is Ignite?

Ignite is an annual retreat for first year business students. It takes place over a weekend in September and gives new business students the opportunity to meet their classmates, senior business students, complete fun challenges, and get an insight into the opportunities at the Alberta School of Business.

Where and when is Ignite?

This year Ignite will be hosted at Birch Bay Ranch just outside of Sherwood Park. It will take place Friday, September 13 to Sunday, September 15. Students will meet at the BSA Office at 3:30 PM on September 13th and depart from campus at 4:00 PM. Students will leave Birch Bay on Sunday at approximately 2:00 PM on September 15th and return to the university around 3:00 PM. 

How much does it cost to attend?

Because the BSA subsidizes the cost of the weekend, the cost per participant is $85.00 which includes meals, accommodations, transportation, and all activities.

How do I sign-up?

Sign-up will take place outside the BSA office on September 6, 9, and 10 from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM. To confirm your spot, you will sign a participation form, give us your contact information, and pay $85. The BSA accepts both cash and credit.

What if I don’t get a spot?

Ignite has a limited number of spots. Once all the tickets are sold, we will create a wait list. If someone drops out, we will contact you via phone and/or email asking if you would like to replace them. If we do not get a response within a few hours, we will contact the next person on the wait list.

How do I get there?

We have arranged buses to take all first year business students from the university to Birch Bay and back.

Do I need to bring my own food?

Birch Bay will be providing our meals – breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you think it is necessary, you may pack extra snacks in your bags (non refrigerated).

What if I have dietary restrictions?

When we do sign-up, the BSA will ask for basic information including dietary restrictions. Birch Bay can accommodate most restrictions like vegetarians and allergies. However, in extreme cases Birch Bay may ask you bring your own meals that they can store and refrigerate. After sign-up, we will contact any people that Birch Bay feels needs to bring their own food.

How can I pay?

You can pay via cash or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express) only. We recommend paying with cash as there is a small transaction fee associated with using a credit card.

What should I pack?

You are allowed one overnight bag, one sleeping bag, one pillow, and one carry-on. You will need a sleeping bag and pillow for the bunk beds in the cabins. Bring outdoor clothing for various temperatures (e.g. shorts/t-shirts and pants/long-sleeves). Windbreakers and raincoats are recommended as many of the activities are outside. Bring closed toed shoes such as runners or sneaker as sandals would limit the activities you could do. Additionally, bring a toiletry bag, bug spray, sunscreen and a towel for showers.

What type of activities should I expect?

There will be tons of different activities throughout the weekend! Some will be business focused and therefore be indoors explained through a presentation while others will be fun focused where you get to explore the camp and do things like archery and ropes courses if the weather allows for it.

What if I don’t know anyone else going?

You are the perfect person to come to Ignite! Most people meet their first business friends at this retreat. You do not have to worry about trying to find someone to sit with at meals or do activities with because we divide you into teams for the weekend and you mostly stick with your team.

Can I request to be on the same team as my friends?

No. We make the teams randomly in hopes that everyone will meet new people. There will be free time activities where you can hang out with friends, however.

What if I can no longer go last minute?

That’s fine! We understand things come up. That being said, Birch Bay Ranch requires that we submit a finalized number of attendees by Wednesday, September 11th. Therefore, we cannot issue refunds past this date. Please contact Camille at email hidden; JavaScript is required if you are no longer able to attend.
